Chapter 4: Pre-festive preparation

"Gong xi, gong xi, gong xi ni ya..."
Tim sang along as he heard the whistle of the song from our next door neighbour.

Gloria:"Come on, don't be as crazy as the lau hum gu* next door. It's not yet your new year."

Tim:"Oh, it's not CNY now but it's going to be in few days time! Yeah! I even bought my new clothes, have ya? Lalala..."

I listened to the pickering while I watched how Jaime roasted the pork knuckles. I suddenly spouted, " I wanna eat bak kwa this year."

There was a moment of silence.

T:" Yes! I want, I want! Mei Zhen Xiang or Ling Zhi Yuan?
His eyes filled with excitement.

Me:" I heard Ling Zhi Yuan's one is better, softer, not as oily and not very sweet compared to MZX :), but the queue now is damn long :(..."
I shook my head. "I wondered if the workers are slowpokes or people really desire to taste the bak kwa at this period."

G:"You all cina so fussy, bak kwa then bak kwa la." Gloria mumbled.

Me & T: "NO!"

Me: "Maybe we should visit Chinatown, might find so goodies and decoration for the house".

Never knowing why, Tim and me were so enthusiatic towards CNY. Without hesitation, we went to chinatown that night and insisted Gloria to go along otherwise she will not get to taste the Ling Zhi Yuan bak kwa. The human traffic in Chinatown was congested, and the NY songs filled the whole street.

T:"Stop stepping backwards. You are bumping onto my chest!" He raised his voice to the uncle in front him.

T to me and G:"Hey, I think you all should be careful of your wallet and those dirty old man and cheeky Bangala." "Butt got touched just now."

Finally after all the squeezing and pushing (no choice, if we don't push, people will still push you. Hehe...) We managed to buy some New Year goodies such as almond cookies, pineapple tarts, taiwanese mochi. We also bought a electronic fire crackers and a precious packet of Ling Zhi Yuan bak kwa. I could still recalled that we desperately beg the friendly auntie in front the queue to help us buy. Tim even complimented her that she looked like Nancy Sit.

When we reached home, we were all tired-bit. However, Tim insisted that we test the decoration 1st. The fire cracker is sensitive to human touch, it gives off a cracking sound when we touch it. At 1st we thought that it was rather fun to play with, but things got worst when the sound gets irritating as Tim touches the fire crackers whenever he walk pass it. And the problem is... We placed the decoration in the middle of the living room.
